Most of my paintings (including this one) are based on the idea that who we are as individuals is a collection of all these different experiences that we’ve had in different places. I combine fragments from those places to suggest this layered process of “becoming”. The imagery in this painting comes from several abstracted views (interior and exterior) of places I’ve lived, worked, or gone to school. The title “The Lay of the Land” suggests this is the current state of things, but the layering present within the piece implies that even as we’re living our lives now, there’s this whole, underlying past- running below it all- that continues to influence us.
