In my paintings, fragments of landscape and abstracted architecture stand in for everything I have lived through in those places. My art depicts multiple locations simultaneously to convey the impact and accumulation of identity-shaping experiences.   This painting has a lot of value contrast, and I chose the title, “Against the Dying of the Light”, to reference that contrast.  The reason that we're able to see/appreciate the light areas is because of the dark that they're next to.  Even though dark sometimes has a bad/gloomy connotation, without it, everything would feel the same. I think this applies to art compositions AND experiences in our lives.

My art depicts multiple locations simultaneously to convey the impact and accumulation of identity-shaping experiences.   Sometimes my paintings include both interior and exterior views of architecture, but this painting definitely leans toward the exterior views.  As suggested in the title, the building forms are depicted from a distance, "Out There".  I think this implies some time has elapsed since the experiences within those spaces and they can be viewed/understood more objectively than before.

“The Lay of the Land”
original artwork / acrylic and charcoal on panel / 48"w x 32"h x 1.5"d / 2024   purchase online and pick up in Seattle gallery.  Please contact with questions.     Most of my paintings (including this one) are based on the idea that who we are as individuals is a collection of all these different experiences that we’ve had in different places.   I combine fragments from those places to suggest this layered process of “becoming”.  The imagery in this painting comes from several abstracted views (interior and exterior) of places I've lived, worked, or gone to school.  The title "The Lay of the Land" suggests this is the current state of things, but the layering present within the piece implies that even as we’re living our lives now, there’s this whole, underlying past- running below it all- that continues to influence us.

In my paintings, fragments of landscape and abstracted architecture stand in for everything I have lived through in those places. My art depicts multiple locations simultaneously to convey the impact and accumulation of identity-shaping experiences.   This painting is one of my personal favorites, largely because it marks a stylistic shift for me. Previously, my work had lots of layers (of course), but things felt more flat and merged together. With this one, I experimented with how to have each layer remain distinct; it resulted in a deeper (but confusing!) sense of space. Exactly what I wanted--this feeling that you could somehow move/navigate your way through the different parts of the painting.  The title, "Negotiating Past Fragments", references this idea of navigating our past experiences.

“On a Different Level”
original artwork / mixed media on panel box, natural edges / 48"w x 32"h x 1.5"d / 2022   purchase online and pick up in Seattle gallery.  Please contact with questions.     Memories do not exist solely on their own; they are persistently entwined with the physical places where they occurred. In my paintings, fragments of landscape and abstracted architecture stand in for everything I have lived through in those places. My art depicts multiple locations simultaneously to convey the impact and accumulation of identity-shaping experiences.   Doorways, windows, and stairs--all from different places in my life- fill this painting.  Many of them are viewed from different angles or eye levels, which is where the title "On a Different Level" originates.  I wanted to use different perspectives to have each layer remain distinct from other layers and to make the space more complex to navigate.  The colors are very bold in this one--perfect for someone who's not afraid of color or needs to inject some energy into a room.
