I was going to write a snarky post explaining how the Spring Salon is the closest thing Utah has to a state lottery, but I actually don’t do snarky very well. So, long story short- the Springville Museum of Art has an annual art show, the Spring Salon, that lots of artists pay money to enter, but only some get juried in. If you are one of the “100 Most Honored Artists of Utah” you automatically get in, leaving the rest of us to vie for the remaining spots. Past bitterness aside, I was still excited to find out that one of my paintings, Measurements #2, was selected to be in this year’s show!

The show runs through July 1, 2012 at the Springville Museum of Art (126 E. 400 S. Springville, UT). Admission is free, and regular hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, Wednesdays 10 am to 9 pm, and Sundays 3 pm to 6 pm. If you haven’t been to the Springville Museum of Art before, it really is worth checking out, particularly for this show where you can see the work of SO many different artists.

Apparently, a lot.

Towards the end of college, for whatever reason, it seemed very presumptous to me to 1.) give a painting a title and 2.) sign my name on the front of it. My senior show was full of unsigned paintings called “Untitled”. Which was fine. Until I started entering art shows and selling (or trying to sell) work, and I needed a way to keep track of which piece was going where. ”Untitled” was not very helpful. Now, of course, I title all my pieces as a way of identification and an additional way for the viewer to connect to the work.

This painting in progress, though, doesn’t have a title (yet!). It’s for an upcoming group show called “Untitled.” The show is based on a fun premise–where the viewers help select what they think the artwork should be called. Look for this show to open at the Rio Gallery in April!

I’m still a little sheepish about signing my name. As I’ve worked with more buyers, though, I’ve learned that they really value a signature. It identifies the artist AND sets the work apart as being an original. And, if you don’t believe me, just watch Antiques Roadshow.

Brownies are baked, artwork is delivered… that’s right, it’s time for another art opening!

This Friday (March 2nd) is the opening reception for an art show that my dad and I are doing at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo. We’ve shown it at a couple of other venues already, but if you haven’t seen it yet, this is our LAST Utah venue. We’d love to see you there!

Here’s the press release for all the details:

“Marinus E. Wolf and Linnie Brown, a father and daughter pair, will display their collaborative artwork at the Covey Center for the Arts. An opening reception for their exhibit, entitled “Related”, will be held Friday, March 2nd, from 6-9 pm. The “Related” exhibit runs through April 25th in the Eccles Gallery at the Covey Center for the Arts, located at 425 W. Center Street in Provo. It is free and open to the public Monday-Thursday 10 am-6 pm and Fridays 10 am-2 pm.

For this collaborative exhibit, the artists selected fourteen sets of crossword clues and answers and created a painting in response to each set. For example, one crossword clue would be “it’s not good to run one”, and its answer would be “fever”. Wolf and Brown’s paintings for that set are displayed next to each other, with the titles coming directly from the clue and answer. Although Wolf and Brown started each pair of paintings with the same group of words, their paintings developed differently and took on diverse meanings. The artists’ work demonstrates and explores the complexity and ambiguity of language.

The artists also chose to include crossword imagery within the artwork. The geometric puzzle imagery is a consistent theme that connects Wolf’s strong, geometric designs with the layering of man-made and natural elements found in Brown’s artwork.

Born in the Netherlands, Marinus E. Wolf immigrated to the United States at 17. After serving in the U.S. Navy for four years, he graduated with a BS in Manufacturing and Design from Brigham Young University and worked in that field and in education. Primarily a self-taught artist, Wolf has always been interested in art and design, and he is enjoying more time to paint since retirement.

Linnie Brown graduated from Brigham Young University with a BFA in Painting and a Teaching License for K-12 Art Education. After teaching art for a couple of years, she now works from her home in Utah, taking care of her family and painting in her studio during school hours. Brown’s work has been shown throughout the Salt Lake area and can be viewed at www.LinnieBrown.com.

I’ve posted a few shots of the show, but if you want to see the rest of it, the Statewide Competition runs through March 9th at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 am- 6 pm and Saturdays 2-5 pm.
