I’m in the process of reworking a few paintings (as usual). The first one shown here had a much different feel to it originally. After a helpful critique with some other artists, I decided to create the cake images using a stencil. I think this lends some consistency throughout the piece, while freeing me up to focus more on compositional, color, and texture choices. I still have more to do on it, but I’m trying to keep it somewhat playful and make the collage parts loose and painterly.
The second piece is almost finished. I tried a few new things while making it, one of which was using clear contact paper as a stencil. I don’t think I’ll do that again because 1.) it’s such a pain to cut out and remove the individual pieces and 2.) it’s an extra big pain when everything’s clear and you can’t see it. Lesson learned, though, and I am really excited about how it’s turning out so far.
